What is a career path?

A career path isn’t always easy to define. And when it comes to your own, coming up with one can be even harder. In this post we’ll explain exactly what a career path is, and how you should go about creating yours.

What is a career path?

A career path is a specific field or occupation that you’ve chosen to go after. That also includes the process you’re taking to start and develop in that field. Many career paths include going through school to get formal training. They also include getting certification to verify that you’re fit to perform in the career field you’ve chosen.

For example, becoming an engineer, doctor or lawyer all involve studying for at least three years after high school before being allowed to work in the field. This increases the demand for high ranking jobs because it means that applicants need to do well academically. Higher education has become so popular that there is now talk about whether we place too much importance on college degrees when people could easily build careers without them.

Other career paths may not be focused around formal education. Instead they offer on the job training so that new team members can hit the ground running. A good example is joining the army, which involves different levels of training depending on the role you’ll be performing. It’s also possible to learn new topics and get certified in some fields by reading self-help books that cover different occupations or technical skills.
