A graphic designer is a professional who assembles images and typography to communicate a specific message. Professionals in graphic design create imagery primarily for published, printed, or electronic media, such as brochures and advertising.

Typical Responsibilities of a Graphic Designer

  • Determine requirements for design projects
  • Study design briefs
  • Schedule design projects and define budget constraints
  • Conceptualize visuals based on project requirements
  • Prepare rough drafts for designs and present them
  • Develop illustrations, logos and other designs using software or by hand
  • Use the appropriate colors and layouts for each graphic
  • Work with copywriters and creative directors to produce final design
  • Test graphics across various media
  • Amend designs after feedback
  • Ensure final graphics and layouts are visually appealing and on-brand

Typical Requirements for Graphic Design

While professionals in graphic design typically have degrees in graphic design or a related field, as well as experience using graphic design software, they must also be able to think creatively and have excellent communication skills. The following list of requirements isn’t exhaustive, but if you’re looking for or putting together a job description for a graphic designer you should include the following:

  • A strong portfolio of illustrations or other graphics
  • Familiarity with design software and technologies (such as the Adobe Creative Suite, Affinity, Gimp or Canva)
  • A keen eye for aesthetics and details
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work methodically and meet deadlines
  • Preferably has a degree in Design, Fine Arts or a related field
